I also used to have trouble on studio dates where every time I would switch to the cross-stick technique, I would miss getting the full sound that occurs when you hit the "sweet spot". The quicker the turnaround, the worse it was. I knew that if I could get the "sweet spot" visible, I could watch it during the switch-over and confirm the perfect placement every time.
